Bandwidth monitoring
Availability of high-speed Internet access is taken for granted by users in large networks these days. Bandwidth is expensive and demand is insatiable, so the network manager must deal with the challenge of keeping costs under control, while at the same time managing bandwidth, prioritizing it and allocating it fairly.
LANGuardian provides you with the information you need to improve network performance and optimize use of the available bandwidth. It shows at a glance how your bandwidth is being used, and enables you to see details of usage by specific network links, users, clients, servers, applications and websites. On all of these reports, you can drill down to greater levels of detail, ultimately to details of the start-time, end-time, and size of each individual data transfer.
LANGuardian monitors your bandwidth usage in the same unobtrusive way it monitors other aspects of network and user activity – it gathers information by analyzing the traffic flowing through your network, so there are no clients or agents to install, and there is no performance impact. LANGuardian does not block users or prevent access, it simply provides you with the information you need so that you can understand how your bandwidth is being used and manage it effectively.
With LANGuardian, you can monitor bandwidth usage on your network in many different ways. You can start with a switch port and see the traffic on that port, drilling down to details of bandwidth usage by individual client machines, users, and even individual file transfers. You can view graphs and reports by sensor, protocol, IP address and subnet. You can also filter bandwidth usage data by time and date, showing anything from short periods of a few minutes (for precise troubleshooting) up to months or years (for capacity planning).
The following are some examples of how our customers use LANGuardian for bandwidth monitoring:

LANGuardian comes with a wide range of built-in reports, as shown in the table below.
| Report | Description |
|---|---|
| Traffic Distribution | Displays a traffic distribution graph that shows the traffic for a specified time period, sensor, protocol, port, or IP address. |
| Top Talkers | Displays a table showing the most active computers on the network and the amount of data transferred by each. You can drill down to individual traffic flows and see details of the amount of data transferred in each flow, as well as the source and destination IP address and port, the start and end time, the protocol and Type of Service (TOS). |
| Top Clients | Displays a table showing the most active clients on the network and the amount of data transferred by each (a client is defined as the computer that initiates a data transfer). For each client, you can drill down to details of the server address and port, the protocol, and the amount of traffic sent and received. |
| Top Servers | Displays a table showing the most active servers on the network and the amount of data transferred by each (a server is defined as the computer that responds to a data transfer initiated by a client). For each server, you can drill down to details of the client address and port, the protocol, and the amount of traffic sent and received. |
| Top Users | Displays a report of the most active users on the network. When LANGuardian is integrated with Microsoft Windows, this report shows actual user names and departments, making it easy for network managers to troubleshoot problems reported by specific users and also to identify users who may deliberately or unwittingly be using disproportionate amounts of bandwidth. |
| Top Departments | Displays, using information from Windows Active Directory, a report of the most active departments on the network and allows you to drill down to details of individual users within that department. |
LANGuardian can generate daily email reports on bandwidth usage, containing data from standard and custom reports. It also includes a configurable Volume Overflow alert, so that you are automatically notified by email when any system on the network sends exceeds a specified amount of bandwidth usage in a specified time period.
The optional LANGuardian Bandwidth Quota Monitor module provides additional bandwidth management features such as quotas, policy groups, and alerting. It also integrates with Bradford Campus Manager and other network access control (NAC) systems. Find out more.
